The RUMO Project is a mitigation measure required under the Federal Environmental Licence issued by Instituto Brasileiro de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Naturais Renováveis (Ibama) for oil production in the Baúna Field, located in the Santos Basin and managed by Karoon Energy.

Karoon Energy is an international oil and gas company with assets in Brazil, the United States and Australia. Since November 2020, Karoon has been operating the Baúna Field, located in the Santos Basin, at a depth ranging from 230 to 280 metres and approximately 210 kilometres from the municipality of Itajaí, on the coast of Santa Catarina.

The activity is carried out through 12 wells connected to a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) called Cidade de Itajaí, where the oil is processed, stored and transferred to another ship for crude oil export.

To support the operation, two vessels navigate weekly through the Itajaí-Açu River Mouth. These vessels are responsible for transporting equipment and supplies from the support base located at the Porto de Itajaí to the offshore platform and for bringing back waste generated on the FPSO to be properly disposed of on land. The vessels are also equipped to handle oil spill incidents in the sea, should they occur.

Helicopters are used to transport personnel working on the platform, departing from Navegantes Airport (SC). As the company utilises both the port and the airport, Karoon Energy implements socio-environmental projects in the region. RUMO Project is one of them.
