The RUMO Project is a mitigation measure required under the Federal Environmental Licence issued by Instituto Brasileiro de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Naturais Renováveis (Ibama) for oil production in the Baúna Field, located in the Santos Basin and managed by Karoon Energy.

Karoon Energy is an international oil and gas exploration and production company with assets in Brazil, the United States of America (USA) and Australia. Since November 2020, Karoon Energy has been operating the Baúna field, located in the Santos Basin, at a depth of between 230 and 280 metres and about 210 kilometres from the municipality of Itajaí, off the coast of Santa Catarina.

Twelve wells are connected to a floating vessel, the FPSO Cidade de Itajaí, where the oil is processed, stored and then transferred to another vessel for export as crude oil.

To support this activity, two ships are used that pass through the Mouth of the Itajaí-Açu River every week. These vessels load equipment and supplies from the support base in the port of Itajaí onto the FPSO and transport waste generated on the FPSO to its final destination on land. They are also prepared to deal with oil spills at sea, should they occur.

Helicopters are used to transport specialists working on the FPSO from Navegantes Airport (SC). In exchange for its use of the port and airport, Karoon Energy carries out socio-environmental projects in the region.

The RUMO Project is one of them.
